The foreign ministers of Germany, France and Poland want in Paris apparently also about a reaction to a possible takeover Greenland through the USA advise. As French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced, France is working with partners on a plan on how to act in such a case. The issue will be discussed at the Weimar Triangle meeting on Wednesday afternoon, it said. “We want to take action, but we want to do it together with our European partners,” Barrot said on France Inter radio. In addition to Barrot, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and his Polish counterpart Radosław Sikorski are also taking part in the meeting.
However, Barrot also said that he had spoken to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who discussed the idea of a takeover Greenland have discarded. “I went with me yesterday US Secretary of State Marco Rubio (…) called, who confirmed that this was not the approach. (…) He ruled out the possibility of an invasion (of Greenland),” he said.
Weimar Triangle expands agenda
The so-called Weimar Triangle is a loose foreign policy discussion and consultation forum between Germany, France and Poland. The aim is to coordinate the three EU members and strengthen European integration. The triangle was founded in August 1991 in Weimar, Thuringia.
The French Foreign Ministry had originally announced that the representatives of the Weimar Triangle wanted to talk at their meeting this Wednesday primarily about European support for Ukraine, which is fighting a defensive war against Russia. Previously, the so-called Coalition of the Willing, a group of Ukraine’s partners, in Paris to discuss an end to the Russian war of aggression.
The US Presidential Office announced on Tuesday that US President Donald Trump was again discussing the acquisition of Greenland and the deployment of US military forces. Despite objections from Europe, Trump took up his idea of controlling the strategically important island.
