The track and field athlete Leo Neugebauer has been voted Germany’s athlete of the year. The 25-year-old decathlon world champion came out ahead of swimmer Florian Wellbrock and professional cyclist Florian Lipowitz in the sports journalists’ vote. Neugebauer received 2,343 points and was honored at the gala in the Kurhaus in Baden-Baden.
A year after his silver medal at the Olympic Games in Paris, Neugebauer won the world title in the decathlon Tokyo won. He follows Niklas Kaul, who became world champion in 2019 and was subsequently also honored as athlete of the year.
Swimmers took second place Florian Wellbrock with 1,377 points after winning four open water gold medals at the World Swimming Championships in Singapore. Third place went to professional cyclist Florian Lipowitz, who finished the Tour de France in third place behind Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard and received 1,140 points.
