The leader of the Die Linke party, Ines Schwerdtner, has warned of the consequences of the planned compulsory military service Men warned from the 2008 vintage. In the ARD morning magazine, Schwertner said: “Mandatory military service is the first step towards conscription through the back door.” It was clear that not enough volunteers would come forward.
The federal government’s plans were approved by the Bundestag, but still have to be confirmed by the Bundesrat. The sampling requirement includes a questionnaire and on-site sampling. Participation is voluntary for women; men must undergo military service, but can then voluntarily decide whether they want to do military service or not.
