The US government has temporarily suspended all major offshore wind projects off the US coast. The Interior Ministry justified this with “national security risks.” The wind turbines could interfere with radar and navigation systems, US Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said in a statement. These disruptions are “caused by the movement of massive turbine blades and the highly reflective towers” and thus obscure military targets, among other things.

Therefore, the leases for all large-scale offshore wind projects under construction would be in the United States suspended until the Defense Ministry and other authorities have developed technical solutions, it said.

US President Donald Trump is a declared opponent of wind power.
